Fr. Hugh Feiss OSB, Chaplain
Fr. Hugh was born in Lakeview, OR, and lived in Baker and Grant counties before moving to Eugene, where he attended grade school. He entered Mt. Angel Abbey in 1960 and was ordained to priestly service in 1966. Fr. Hugh did most of his subsequent graduate work in philosophy and theology at The Catholic University of America and Sant’ Anselmo in Rome. He taught humanities, philosophy and theology for 30 years at Mt. Angel Seminary, and directed the abbey library at Mt. Angel for 10 years, before coming to Ascension Priory in 1996. Here the time not devoted to liturgy and other community activities, he spent teaching, writing and doing pastoral work, which along with his friends are the great loves in this world. Fr. Hugh coordinates the monastery’s oblate program and the Road Scholar programs offered in the monastery’s retreat house/ministry center. He also works with several distance learning programs in theology. Fr. Hugh’s academic interests center on medieval religious thought and practice, monastic history, and theology about Christ and creation. He has a deep interest in ornithology and natural history generally. Fr. Hugh served as chaplain at St. Paul’s student center on the Boise State campus for seven years and is excited to bring his wisdom and experience to St. John’s.
